John,
It was 17 years ago this week when Governor Howard Dean founded Democracy
for America like a phoenix out of the ashes of his 2004 Presidential
campaign.
Back then, no one had ever tried to carry on the work and goals of a
campaign by turning it into a year-round national organization like we did
here at DFA. In fact, everyone said what we wanted to do here was
impossible. It wouldn’t work. We’d fail, and it would be an embarrassment
to everyone involved, especially Governor Dean.
We did it anyway.
We knew our movement. We knew the center of our movement wasn’t the
political establishment in Washington DC. We knew that progressives
nationwide were ready to take action all across America. More importantly,
YOU knew it.
And you were ready to prove it.
Now, 17 years later, DFA is stronger than ever with a history of success
proving that doing the impossible is exactly what we do best.

They said it was impossible...
... to beat Republicans and win in red districts with progressive
Democrats. That didn’t stop DFA members from electing Reps. Jerry McNerney
in 2006, Mark Takano in 2012, or Katie Porter in 2018 (to highlight just
three).
They said it was impossible. We did it anyway and we won.

They said it was impossible...
... to take on the Democratic establishment and beat corporate Democrats
with progressive Democrats. That didn’t stop DFA members from electing
Donna Edwards in 2008, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2018, or Jamaal Bowman
in 2020 (you know, to highlight just three).
They said it was impossible. We did it anyway and we won.

They said it was impossible...
... to flip entire states from Purple to Blue by investing in progressive
campaigns at all levels of office with a long-term strategy through
multiple elections. That didn’t stop DFA members from flipping Virginia
(2013 to 2019) or Georgia (2017 to 2020).
... to reform criminal justice in America’s biggest cities by electing
progressive champions willing to fight the status quo. That didn’t stop
DFA members from electing Kim Foxx (Chicago - 2016), Larry Krasner
(Philadelphia - 2017), or Wesley Bell (St. Louis – 2018).

And to bring this full circle to our beginnings, they said it was
impossible to create a grassroots surge within the Democratic Party to
defeat the establishment’s choice for DNC Chair and elect a leader who
understood we needed a 50 State Strategy to Fight Everywhere to Win
Everywhere.
That didn’t stop DFA members from electing Governor Howard Dean DNC Chair,
Democracy for America’s very first campaign victory way back in 2005.
They said it was impossible. We did it anyway and we won.

We’re not done. Not even close.
Right now, they say it’s impossible to get Medicare for All, a Green New
Deal or to Defund the Police. You know what we say to that?
We’re going to do it anyway.
I’m grateful that you power this movement. It’s an honor to lead Democracy
for America.
DFA’s history over the last 17 years is incredible and unstoppable.
Let’s keep it going for another 17 years and beyond.

Let’s show them that when they say it’s impossible... we do it anyway, and
we win!
