This week, eight people -- including six Asian American women -- were killed in a mass shooting in Atlanta, Georgia. I am devastated by this incredible loss. It has been another grim reminder of a pattern of gun violence that has become all too common in our country.

The likelihood you might become a victim of a shooting often hinges on your ethnicity, gender identity, race, or neighborhood. And since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have been facing increasing levels of harassment, violence, and hate.

I stand in solidarity with the AAPI community and the countless Americans who have been working to end the gun violence epidemic. We deserve to live in a country where we can feel safe in public places and where hate can't be armed.

Last week, I voted with the Democratic House majority to pass legislation to expand background checks for gun sales and close the 'Charleston loophole' -- a gap in federal law that drops uncompleted background checks if three business days have passed.

Now, I am calling on the Senate to make gun safety a reality and pass legislation that will save lives. Add your name to demand the Senate bring the universal background check legislation to a vote.

Our nation is more unified in the fight to end gun violence than ever before. We are fighting for an America where we can go to work, school, the store, or church without fearing for our lives. I won't stop demanding gun safety legislation, and I hope you'll keep speaking up with me, John.
