*Content warning: The below email discusses racist violence against the Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.*

Hello,

Earlier this week, a gunman opened fire on three massage parlors in the Atlanta, killing eight people, including six Asian women, and marking the latest shocking act in the recent wave of anti-Asian violence across the country.

This massacre didn't happen out of the blue. Let's not forget: Trump spent the last year fanning the flames of anti-Asian hate by referring to the coronavirus as the "China virus."

Here in Michigan, State Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey said he doesn't regret using the racist phrase either.

The words of our elected leaders have consequences. And time and time again, Shirkey has callously used his to stoke the flames of hatred and division.

None of us should ever be silent in the face of any form of hate. If you are looking for ways to be a better ally, we ask you to recognize the struggles of others and sign on to stand in solidarity with the AAPI community. Thank you for speaking out,
