Legislative Update 2021

The 60 day Florida Legislative session is in full swing and many policies that will impact our children and their schools are being discussed.

It is so important to tell our elected officials what we want for children, teachers and public schools.

Read the update below and visit the Advocacy Dashboard to take action for students. We make it easy to identify and contact your legislators via email and/or social media. Together, we can advocate for policies that invest in children and support their future.

tests

Tests should not punish kids, teachers

The pandemic has had an incredible impact on children, teachers and public schools. The results from state tests like FSA will not be reliable and must not be used to grade/fund schools, retain students, or evaluate teachers. Tell your legislators that Florida's teachers and students deserve better. Tell them to suspend the harsh impacts of state testing.

Graduates

Bright Futures at risk

A bill to change Bright Futures as we know it has passed its first Senate committee and is moving to its next stop in the Senate Education Appropriations Committee. Legislators need to hear from you today. Tell Gov. DeSantis, committee members, and your legislators that Florida's best and brightest deserve better.

School vouchers

School Vouchers drain funding

The full Senate will vote on a bill  (SB 48) that drastically expands voucher programs. These programs drain millions of dollars from public schools, colleges and universities every year by paying for children to attend unregulated, privately owned schools with no accountability or oversight. Less money for Bright Futures means more money for private school vouchers.

Tell your elected officials to support Florida's students by investing in public schools, colleges and universities instead of unregulated, privately owned K-12 schools.

School budgets

2021 Budget: How will schools fare?

The Florida Legislature has one duty during their 60 day session- to pass a balanced budget. As the budget process continues, we must all demand that they make education a priority. Florida falls near the bottom of all states for per pupil funding. Tell your legislators that Florida's teachers and students deserve our investment.
