As a veteran, I know weapons of war have no place on our streets.
New Jersey is a leader in our country when it comes to common-sense gun-safety legislation, but as a former federal prosecutor, I constantly saw New Jersey’s good gun-safety laws undermined by weaker laws in neighboring states.
That’s why the first piece of legislation I cosponsored when I first arrived in Washington was a bipartisan plan to require background checks for all gun sales. This is a common-sense step that people in New Jersey and around the country support. It sat untouched in the Senate under Mitch McConnell’s leadership for over a year .
We cannot wait until tragedy strikes again to take action. The time is now -- it’s long past time to enact common-sense gun-safety reforms in Congress to protect our children, neighbors, and fellow Americans.
That’s why last week, my colleagues and I once again passed this important measure in the House to establish universal background checks. Will you add your name and put pressure on the Senate to improve gun safety in our country? [[link removed]]
With the support of more than 90% of Americans, this bill would help keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers, violent criminals, people with mental illnesses, or terrorists before anyone gets hurt. It would also close loopholes that allow criminals to purchase guns online.
And with Democratic majorities in Congress and President Joe Biden in the White House, we’re in a stronger position than ever to advance this legislation, but we need to keep public pressure high.
The more supporters like you speak out, the more pressure we put on Congress to get this done. Too many leaders still refuse to take a stand on this issue, but I guarantee you I have the courage to take action .
