With over 42 million people cumulatively owing over $1.7 trillion in student loans, progressives in Washington are pushing hard for student loan forgiveness. The recently-passed American Rescue Plan Act even includes a provision to make student loan forgiveness tax-free until 2025!

However, since Democrats lack the votes needed to cancel student debt via legislation, the decision will likely come down to the Biden Administration.

And, while Senators like Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren are advocating for $50,000 in student loan forgiveness, the Biden Administration has pushed back at that idea, saying executive powers don't give him that authority. Instead, President Biden has said he will consider using an executive order to forgive up to $10,000 per borrower.
