I was so incredibly proud of and passionate about getting the American Rescue Plan through the Senate and signed into law for many reasons, but one of the greatest was its vast expansion of the child tax credit.
This provision will be a financial lifeline for 90% of families with children across our country – and it will undoubtedly lift countless kids out of poverty. I can't begin to put into words how truly revolutionary it is.
Families who were struggling to get food on the table for their children will get help. Families who lost sleep at night over how to make their next rent payment will get help. Families who couldn't get childcare so they could go to work will get help.
This is the kind of long-overdue relief that the American people need and deserve, and I'm already eager to continue building on this achievement to get even more done for our families and communities. But Friend, I want to make sure your priorities are informing every step of the work ahead.
This pandemic shed a crucial light on all of the ways American families were already hurting before COVID-19 ever existed. Now, we're making up for lost time. We need to go big for children and families – and we need to do it right here, right now.
