AT&T issued a blog post whining about the fact that the California bill bans them from prioritizing their own streaming apps and content by exempting them from data caps.
John,
It’s happening. AT&T just announced that –– because of our court victory with the California net neutrality law –– they are ending discriminatory “zero rating” data plan scams not just in California but across the entire US.1
Right on cue, telecom lobbyists are firing up their disinformation machine. AT&T issued a blog post whining about the fact that the California bill bans them from prioritizing their own streaming apps and content by exempting them from data caps.
Of course, what they’re not telling consumers is that those data caps are completely unfair and arbitrary to begin with! And these “zero rating” schemes just let Big Telecom companies manipulate what you see and do online by pushing their own corporate content and making you pay (by using your data) for everything else.
Net neutrality rules exist to prevent exactly this type of “Cable company f***ery,” as John Oliver put it.2And we have a real opportunity to get these basic protections restored for everyone, first at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and then in Congress.
But AT&T’s announcement today makes it clear that telecom lobbyists will be pulling out all the stops, lying their butts off, and fighting dirty to stop us from bringing net neutrality back.
They’ve got hundreds of millions of dollars to spend on lobbying and bribing politicians with campaign contributions. But we’ve got all of you: the millions of people from across the political spectrum who understand why net neutrality is so important and have been fighting for years to defend it.
