When the Brady Background Check System was created in 1993, our country saw a decrease in gun-related crimes, slashing homicide rates in half and reducing assaults, sex crimes, and robberies by an astounding 75%.

Background checks work. That’s why I helped pass two important background check bills that are supported by 90% of all American voters. Passing this legislation is vital because these bills will save lives.

While the Brady Bill created a much needed process for screening people for gun ownership, far too many loopholes remain open and our two new bills would fix that.

Right now, people are able to obtain guns online or at gun shows without undergoing any type of background check, leaving room for firearms to get into the wrong hands. Our new legislation closes the loopholes which allow private transfers to take place — the sales that allow individuals who commit massacres, like the one in Charleston, SC at the Emanuel AME Church, to purchase firearms.

Gun violence affects all of us, and we must demand to our leaders that it is time to address this once and for all.
