John,
Last night, we lost eight lives to gun violence, while one person was injured.
The pain felt by the families and communities targeted by this violence is excruciating. Every single time another family is ripped apart, our communities are devastated.
By all indications, this was a targeted attack. Authorities say the alleged shooter went to three different locations to commit this atrocity, and the victims were overwhelmingly Asian women — raising suspicions among many that this was the latest anti-Asian hate crime.
The hatred and violence must stop.
Reports of crimes against the Asian community have been surging across the country — likely fueled by the bigotry of the former president. The attacks and scapegoating of our Asian community go against everything this country, a nation of immigrants, stands for.
Our community needs a swift and thorough investigation, and we must have justice for the families. Nothing can bring back those we lost. I know that all too well myself.
But we can work to honor their legacy and pass laws that will keep our communities safer. Today, let us each re-commit to the work required to dismantle racism and end gun violence.
My best,
Lucy McBath
