Special note from Alina Harway, NPH's Communications Director

Hi there, John! After curating the Round Up (formerly known as the Bulletin) for nearly five years, I'm excited that my colleague Londre Holmes will be taking over starting in April. For those of you who haven't met Londre, he's been helping strengthen and grow our digital communications since January 2020. Now, he'll be bringing his own perspective and style to NPH's bi-weekly round up of the most important affordable housing news in our region. Stay tuned for more from Londre ahead...

Wednesday, March 17 Round Up: The federal COVID relief bill & Bay Area housing, Newsom's State of the State, the Bay Area Housing Financial Authority, Leadership Awards, trainings, & more!

President Biden Signs American Rescue Plan Act

On March 11 President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act (H.R. 1319), a $1.9 trillion Covid-19 stimulus package that will provide relief to those struggling with the health and economic toll of the pandemic. There are several critical affordable housing and community development provisions in the legislation, including emergency rental assistance, homeowner assistance, emergency housing vouchers, the HOME program, and more. See more analysis on this package from our partners at Enterprise.

More good news on the national housing front, as Marcia Fudge was recently confirmed as HUD secretary. Secretary Fudge will be a strong leader and a critical ally in rebuilding HUD to create strong, thriving, inclusive communities for all of our Black, White, and Brown neighbors. Click here to read our national partner NLIHC's press release on Secretary Fudge's confirmation.

NPH Responds to the State of the State

Governor Gavin Newsom delivered his State of the State address last week, highlighting the state’s recent progress in addressing the ongoing needs of state residents as we continue to contend with the COVID-19 pandemic. NPH is grateful for the significant investments that California has made to keep people housed.

As California continues its journey towards COVID recovery, we must prioritize housing as essential infrastructure. We continue to need long term fixes to ensure that tenants stay housed when evictions protections expire. And to invest in big, bold solutions for affordable housing and homelessness prevention. Learn more about our policy priorities and how we plan to continue address housing issues in the Bay Area and California here.

Help Support the Bay Area Housing Finance Authority

The Bay Area faces an exciting opportunity in its innovative approach to bring and scale a regional strategy towards housing. MTC and ABAG have identified five Bay Area Housing Finance Authority (BAHFA) pilot programs that will enable the region to address urgent housing challenges facing Bay Area residents, such as the risks of displacement due to rent increases.

A seed investment of $18.5 million is needed to launch the five pilot programs and will work to sustain the momentum of grassroots support and philanthropic interest in BAHFA. The Bay Area Housing for All (BAHA) coalition supports the request by MTC and ABAG for $18.5 million in this year’s FY 2021-22 State Budget. You can add your support to the letter by following this link
