…would mean thousands of lives saved
Dear John,
What would a world without the Helms Amendment look like? Anu Kumar, Ipas’s President and CEO, recently spoke with The Washington Post about this. (The Helms Amendment is a U.S. policy rooted in racism and colonialism that denies abortion care to women globally.)
A world without the Helms Amendment would mean:
* Millions more people could access abortion and contraceptive care.
* Globally, women would make their own reproductive health decisions completely void of input from U.S. policy.
* Health providers could offer their patients the information and care they need.
This would not only put critical power back in the hands of women and girls all over the world, but it would also save lives. According to our partners at Guttmacher Institute, if the Helms Amendment was repealed, there could be approximately 19 million fewer unsafe abortions and 17,000 fewer maternal deaths each year.
For the United States to be part of the solution, rather than the problem, we need to repeal the Helms Amendment and pass the Abortion is Health Care Everywhere Act. Learn more about this exciting bill and what it would mean for the world in last week’s article in The Washington Post.
