John,
I want to sincerely thank you and all DFA members for supporting me since
the beginning. From my first run for Congress in 2018 to this week’s
confirmation as the next United States Secretary of the Interior, you have
always been there for me.
DFA’s early and meaningful contributions have made it possible for me, a
member of the Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico, to be the country's first
Native American Cabinet secretary.
Due to the help that DFA members have provided along the way, I will now
lead the agency that is responsible for not only managing the nation's
public lands but also honoring and upholding its treaties with the
Indigenous people from whom those lands were stolen.
To every single DFA member who made their voice heard in support of me --
thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I am so honored that you have put your faith and trust in me to become the
United States Secretary of the Interior and direct an agency that oversees
our nation’s federally recognized Indian tribes and Alaska Native
villages, one-fifth of all the land in the United States and 1.7 billion
acres of our coastlines.
I will work prudently to protect our national parks, wildlife refuges, and
other public lands, and to preserve biologically and culturally important
sites.
I will carry your dedication with me as I continue the hard work to fight
climate change and ensure that future generations have a habitable planet
to live on.
As I have said before, growing up in my mother’s Pueblo household made me
fierce. With this experience, I’ll be fierce for all of us, our planet,
and all of our protected land.
Thank you for all that you do,
Deb Haaland
Secretary of the Interior
