John,

Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate and acknowledge all of the hard work that women leaders and activists do to achieve greater gender equity. As a part of honoring women’s history, we’re highlighting women activists and the work they’ve done.

Women, especially women of color, pioneered the women’s suffrage movement, which fought for the rights of all women at the ballot box. And while the work to earn equal rights for all women is far from over, it’s important to recognize those who led the way as we continue to fight for equity.

Check out these amazing women suffragists below ↓

Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1931)
Journalist, activist, and researcher, Ida B. Wells-Barnett founded the Alpha Suffrage Club made to empower African American Women and include them in the women’s suffrage movement. She also led a large anti-lynching campaign and was a well-known civil rights advocate.

Mabel Ping-Hua Lee (1897-1966)
As a 16 year old Chinese-American immigrant, Mabel Ping-Hua Lee was a suffrage activist in her New York Community. Due to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, Chinese immigrants could not vote. However, this did not stop Lee from leading a suffrage parade in Greenwich Village for immigrants and women.

These women, plus many more, made crucial differences within communities across the country to empower all women to stand up for equal rights.

Thanks to them, women have power at the ballot box -- and now it’s up to us to honor their memory and continue encouraging women to get involved in their communities and use their voices by voting. Take the first step now -- sign up to receive information from When We All Vote’s sister organization, the United State of Women, about how to take action across the gender equity movement this month and every month. Thanks for being a part of our team, and Happy Women’s History Month!
