I have stood at more crime scenes than I care to recount where innocent lives were lost to gun violence.
I have turned on the news, scrolled through Twitter or opened a newspaper to see too many headlines about another mass shooting in America.
I have seen far too many sons and daughters, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers killed by the hand of someone with a gun – someone who should have never had a gun in the first place.
Our nation is the only industrialized country on earth where this happens – where the statistics, the stories, the headlines, the life lost is beyond a scope of comparison. Inaction has been the reaction for far too many decades. At long last, Congress is doing something. And that's why I am asking for your help to ensure commonsense gun safety laws become the law of the land.
Just recently, the House of Representatives – in a bipartisan vote – passed H.R. 8, which would significantly expand background checks and close a loophole that lets gun sales proceed without a completed background check if three businesses days have passed. In short, this legislation will save lives.

Now that we have Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress, and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris at the helm of our federal government, the opportunity to pass legislation like this – that will make a meaningful difference – is real. But we still need to garner support and make it crystal clear to the majority of U.S. senators that this bill must be urgently passed.

Ending gun violence in America is one of my top priorities. I've fought time and time again – on the House floor, in committee meetings, at rallies, through meetings with constituents, through meetings with colleagues – to see action realized.
