MARCH 2021
Marc My Words: Spring is in the Air
A Letter from the Breathe Southern California President & CEO
Hello John,

After a full year of pandemic tribulations, I am overjoyed that Spring 2021 is finally in sight!

But while the days will be longer, and the flowers will bloom, I have to temper my excitement because springtime comes with some pretty nasty asthma and allergy triggers. This can be scary, especially if you or a family member has just received an asthma diagnosis.

As a father of three daughters with asthma and allergies, I know what it's like to constantly be worrying about a child's ability to breathe. If you relate to these worries, you might be interested in Breathe SoCal's new edition of our Lung Power™ virtual workshops (TuesdayThursday, and Saturday), teaching asthma patients, parents, and friends about lung inflammations and how to support yourself or your loved ones to take control of asthma symptoms and manage springtime flareups.

If you do not relate to the asthma struggle, you can join one of our other events this month! March will be packed with a wide array of informative webinars made just for you. Check out our full event calendar to register for one of our free workshops, with topics ranging from electric vehicle rebates for Southern Californians, to the dangers of teen vaping, to the harms that wildfires pose to our respiratory health. You can also follow us on social media @BreatheSoCal, and me @mcarrel, to add new events to your calendar as they come up.

I look forward to seeing all of you in the Zoom room!

In Health,
Marc Carrel
President & CEO

Coming Up This Month!
Help us commemorate World TB Day by joining the LA Department of Public Health for a webinar on March 24th.
On March 24th, the Coalition to End TB in Los Angeles County, along with other TB organizations throughout the world, commemorate World TB Day. Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the world’s most deadly infectious diseases that spreads through the air from person to person.

Two million people in California are living with TB infection, a form of TB that can be treated before becoming deadly. But most affected Californians do not know they have it. World TB Day is a time to renew our commitment to ending this devastating disease.

Do your part by sharing information from the World TB Day social media campaign found here.

We also invite you to join us for a webinar on World TB Day, hosted by the LA County TB Control Program. Program Director Dr. Julie Higashi will share TB case data for 2020, talk about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on TB services, and recognize the efforts of our healthcare workers on the frontline that have continued to help TB patients stay healthy. The event is on March 24th from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM.
Nip Addiction in the Bud
Did you know that Tobacco product use is established primarily during adolescence? Nearly 9 out of 10 adults who smoke cigarettes daily first try smoking by age 18!

That's why we've created the FiRST! Program- to educate middle-school students so they understand the long-term harm that comes from tobacco and nicotine use. Sponsor a smoke-free student every month to put a stop to teen nicotine dependence!
