Democrats flipped the Senate when Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff
were elected on January 5th in Georgia. That took away a lot of power from
Mitch McConnell — but it still left McConnell with a powerful tool to
obstruct progress: The Filibuster.

But as more and more Senate Democrats say they want to end the filibuster
or consider nixing it, Mitch McConnell is getting nervous. It’s the one
tool McConnell has to block hugely popular policies that Democrats want to
pass because, under the filibuster rule, Democrats need 60 votes to pass
most bills.

McConnell is so nervous he even spoke about it on the floor of the Senate
just hours ago. He said if Democrats get rid of the filibuster, nobody in
the Senate “can even begin to imagine what a completely scorched earth
Senate would look like.” That’s simply not true.

[ [link removed] ]We imagine a Senate that will pass an historic voting rights law, a $15
minimum wage, critical labor protections for workers, racial justice
measures, legislation to stop climate change, campaign finance reform, and

President Obama said the filibuster is a relic of the Jim Crow era because
it allows the Republican minority in the Senate to block progress on
social, economic, and racial justice for communities of color. Republicans
like McConnell are so desperate to hang on to the filibuster and block
voting rights legislation because it will be harder for them to win future
elections if they don’t.

Senate Democrats must end the filibuster and pass laws we’ve waited
