We need to end the Hyde Amendment, John

Hi John,

Today marks the 43rd anniversary of the passage of the discriminatory Hyde Amendment, which denies abortion coverage to anyone who gets their health care through the federal government. For more than four decades, anti-abortion politicians have used the Hyde Amendment to restrict coverage for anyone who depends on health care through Medicaid, Medicare, the Indian Health Service (IHS), the military, PeaceCorps, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and so many other programs serving millions of people.

John, if you agree that each of us should be able to live, work, and make decisions about our health and our future with dignity and economic security, share your message to end the Hyde Amendment on Twitter today.

And even as the Supreme Court and federal government swing further against abortion rights, we can find real reason for hope in the creative advocacy happening in states and cities across the country. Just this year, Maine’s governor signed a law expanding state health insurance to cover abortion care, and New York City and Austin both harnessed the power of their city’s budget to expand access to abortion care — proof that while some states are in a race to the bottom to legislate abortion out of reach, other states and cities are doing everything in their power to protect and expand access.

John, abortion restrictions and coverage bans like the Hyde Amendment force people to delay care or stop them from getting abortions altogether. We’re long overdue to end this discriminatory rule.

In solidarity,

Andrea Miller
