The solemn responsibility to declare war lies with Congress alone.

Tammy Duckworth

We are coming up on the eighteenth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq — but last time Congress fully debated our military operations there was nearly 20 years ago. We are still relying on Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs) from 2001 and 2002 to justify our actions in the Middle East.

That means we have servicemembers sacrificing in the Middle East who literally hadn’t been born the last time Congress fully debated whether they should be there.

The solemn responsibility to declare war lies with Congress alone, not the president. After so many years, it’s our job to exert our Constitutional control over America’s war powers.

That’s why I’m helping lead a bipartisan bill with Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia to repeal our decades old AUMFs — and I’m calling on my colleagues in Congress to support our legislation.

Do you agree we need to repeal these outdated AUMFs? Sign my petition here:

I understand how much our troops sacrifice for our nation — and that’s why I’m working as hard as I can to ensure we don’t put a single U.S. soldier in harm’s way in a conflict Congress has not authorized.

All my best,

Tammy Duckworth
