March is Women’s History Month and it’s important for us to take the time and recognize all that women have contributed to our history, our nation, and our world. And this incredible celebration began right here in Sonoma County!

The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women established Women’s History Week in 1978, and the movement continued to grow with every year, until Congress officially declared March as Women’s History Month in 1987.

This journey reflects the story of so many women in American history: a struggle for recognition, a fight to be heard, and new victories that benefit us all.

From Harriet Tubman and Eleanor Roosevelt to Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, Kamala Harris and countless others, women have shaped our history and helped our nation evolve and strive for equity. The COVID pandemic has hit women — especially women of color — disproportionately. I am committed to helping women rejoin the workplace, get the assistance they need, and to look towards a future where all women have the opportunity to thrive. Despite the progress we’ve made, women still have to advocate for their rights each and every day in America — and I am committed to standing alongside them. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but today, we celebrate the women who came before us and all they’ve achieved to make our nation a better place.
