John,

No one should fear for their safety in their home, at a movie theater, at school, walking down their street, at a concert, sitting in their car, or anywhere.

That's why Diana was one of the first co-sponsors of the historic Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 (H.R. 8), the first meaningful federal action to prevent gun violence in nearly two decades. And just last week, the House re-passed H.R. 8, after gun-lobby ally Mitch McConnell prevented this historic gun safety measure from being voted on in the last term.

Now it's on its way to being voted on in the Senate.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made the gun violence epidemic even more deadly, disproportionately in Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color already vulnerable. May of 2020 had 56 mass shootings, the most of any month since tracking began, and gun purchases have skyrocketed. In April of 2020, 72 percent more gun sale-related background checks were conducted than in April of the previous year.

The rising unemployment rates and economic insecurity have exacerbated this crisis, too. Like the COVID-19 pandemic, gun violence is a public health crisis that thrives off of racial and economic injustice.

For years, parents, students, health experts, and community leaders have been begging for action on this epidemic. Now that there is a Democratic-led Senate and a new administration, we need to do so immediately. We can pass more comprehensive legislation like H.R. 8 -- and we need you to take action with us. Demand that the Senate keep our communities safe from gun violence by passing H.R. 8. Sign on now >>

Thank you,

Team DeGette
