Dear John,
As you might know, the federal government plans to increase the carbon tax from its current level of $30 per tonne to $170 per tonne by 2030.
That Environment Minister has said this hike will have “almost zero” impact on the economy – but his government has yet to release any analysis of the effects of the higher carbon tax.
I'm happy today to announce that the Fraser Institute has released the first independent, publicly available analysis of the estimated effects of a $170 per tonne carbon tax in Canada.
It turns out – unsurprisingly – that the higher carbon tax will have significant impacts on Canadians and the economy from coast to coast:
-
Over 200,000 jobs lost nationwide;
-
a massive $44 billion decline in GDP;
-
higher deficits;
-
higher energy costs; and critically,
-
these increases fall disproportionately on lower-income households.
