It's World Kidney Day!

Did you know that approximately 1/3 of people with diabetes may have kidney disease?

Diabetes can have an impact on your kidneys. Your kidneys filter waste from your blood. Over time, high blood sugar (blood glucose) from diabetes can cause problems with your kidneys' ability to filter your blood. If your blood sugar stays too high for too long, the problems get worse. This is called chronic kidney disease (CKD).

But there's good news! There are ways you can prevent or reduce your risk of developing CKD.

Here are some tips from us for how to keep your kidneys healthy:

* Manage your blood sugar and blood pressure to try to stay in your target ranges
* Take your medications as prescribed by your doctor
* See your doctor regularly and have your kidney function screened at least once a year

This World Kidney Day, let's all make a pledge to follow these tips and prioritize the health of our kidneys.

The American Diabetes Association® is fighting to end the diabetes epidemic. We continue to work to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of all people with diabetes every day-and this work contributes to preventing the complications of diabetes and a lot less CKD. Will you help us advance our vision of a world free of diabetes and its burdens by giving a generous, tax-deductible donation today?
