Today, I was proud to preside over the passage of the Enhanced Background Checks Act in the House Chambers for the safety of all Americans. I live just a few miles where the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut happened. I have felt the real pain family members, neighbors and community members felt losing so many precious lives. Connecticut knows that pain, and we still feel it. I have met too many families who've suffered heartbreak over losing loved ones to gun violence. This is our chance to help end that suffering.

That's why after Congress passed the American Rescue Plan this week, the House passed two bipartisan gun violence prevention bills today:
- H.R.8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, which requires a background check for every gun sale or transfer
- H.R.1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act, which would end the Charleston Loophole in which firearms are sold before a background check is completed that enabled the murder of nine innocent worshipers at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC.

An average of 100 lives are taken each day due to the gun violence epidemic in America. Throughout the pandemic and economic crises we have faced for the last year, this problem has worsened.

By passing H.R.8 and H.R.1112, with Republican support, we delivered on our promise to take strong, effective action to address the gun violence epidemic and save lives.

Jim
