Hey Team,
My life has been defined by service.
The oath that guided my work in uniform as a former Army Ranger guides it through the halls of Congress. So when I was called upon in 2020 to be one of the House Managers in Donald Trump's first impeachment trial, I knew I had to once again serve my country and uphold that oath.
I'm not a career politician. And I didn't come to Congress to impeach a president. But after reviewing and laying out evidence about how he dangled military aid in front of our allies for his own political gain, I knew that he posed a grave danger to our democracy. I never could have imagined that a year later, I would be back in the House listening to a second impeachment trial against Donald Trump for his efforts to throw out the results of a free and fair election and incite violence at the Capitol.
Despite the overwhelming evidence laid out against him, most Republicans chose party loyalty over their duty to serve the American people and protect our democracy. As a veteran and a fellow American, I was sickened by their choice to acquit Donald Trump despite the mountain of evidence pointing to his guilt.
They allowed Donald Trump to walk free from impeachment for a second time — setting a dangerous precedent and leaving open the possibility that he may try to run for office again in the near future.
But, our democracy is only as strong as those who uphold it, and we will continue rebuilding our country back. NewDems will always side with the American people and our democracy over politics. We’re committed to unity — but unity requires accountability, both for Trump and for his enablers in Congress.
Thank you for standing with us. We’re proud to have you on the NewDems Team.
