It's been a crazy few days, Friend,
I just got back from a weekend campaigning for our General Assembly candidates in Virginia Beach, Henrico, Richmond, and Fluvanna County. Before that, we had one of the wildest weeks I've ever seen in Washington.
I don't want to go on and on about Donald Trump, or the Republicans who are trying to flip this Senate seat red. What's on my mind right now are the people I've been talking to over the past few days -- Virginians who care about the future of our country and who are worried about what's happened to it these past couple of years. What I'm seeing are people who are really paying attention to what's going on in Donald Trump's Washington...people who are hungry for change and willing to put their time, money, and effort into making that happen.
In 2018, we called it the "Blue Wave," and we saw folks all across this country show up to the polls and demand better from their government. Frankly, I wish it hadn't taken Donald Trump to get us to this point. But the important thing now is that Americans of all stripes are starting to look at the mess he's created and say what the heck is going on?
What we've got to do now is show folks that, yes, we can do better than Donald Trump and the Republican Senate that's enabled him. Then we need to get out there and work hard to put a Democrat in the White House and take back the United States Senate. And the truth is, that path to victory runs right through the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Here's what I'm doing about it: In the Senate, I've been working hard to hold this President accountable and put forward bills that secure our elections, make healthcare more affordable, and make our economy focus once again on human beings, not machines or next quarter's profit. In Virginia, I'm working hard to elect Democrats up and down the ballot in 2019. And I'm building a campaign operation that can beat Donald Trump and whatever Republican that ends up running against me in 2020. There have already been a few who've thrown their hat in the ring, and tonight is the first FEC fundraising deadline since that major development in our campaign.
That means it is absolutely critical we hit our fundraising goal that we've set for this quarter. I've talked to my team, and it looks like we are $40,000 short of where we need to be. I know after the crazy week our country has been through, the last thing any of us want to be worrying about is campaign fundraising. But candidly, this is really important to me and to our prospects for winning in 2020. So I'm asking you, please make that first contribution today to help us win in 2020 and finally start turning this country around.
