Coalition Advances Pilot Civics Initiative in Florida
JMC, The Bill of Rights Institute, and The Ashbrook Center
Aim to Reach 6,800 Florida Teachers in Two Years

The Jack Miller Center, The Bill of Rights Institute, and The Ashbrook Center have partnered on the American Civics and History Initiative, ([link removed]) a multi-year pilot project to cultivate informed, patriotic citizens by deepening the knowledge of middle and high school social studies teachers.

The initiative offers an array of seminars and courses that provide K-12 teachers the knowledge and content necessary to be highly effective in teaching our founding principles and history.

This project aims to reverse movements in civics education, which have been designed to minimize or denigrate America's history and principles, or to omit them from civics curricula altogether.

JMC programs are taught by our faculty partners from area colleges and universities. The most recent seminar in the series, titled "Should the Constitution be Understood as the Founders Understood It?", was held online February 27 and led by Prof. ([link removed]) David Ramsey ([link removed]) (University of West Florida).

The American History and Civics Initiative is our first coalition-based effort. Once this project is proven in Florida, we will be reaching out to other states to make this a nationwide effort.

JMC's K-12 efforts began in 2016 with our first project in Chicago, and our individual region-based projects have since expanded to New York City and Philadelphia along with statewide efforts in Wisconsin and Virginia.

'Reclaiming Patriotism in an Age of Extremes'

Tomorrow, the JMC will host a conversation with Steven B. Smith ([link removed]) (Yale) on his new book, Reclaiming Patriotism in an Age of Extremes ([link removed]) . ([link removed])

In his book, Professor Smith describes how patriotism is a matter of both the head and the heart, and how it is misunderstood by both nationalism and cosmopolitanism. He makes the case for 'enlightened patriotism,' which holds true our highest ideals without turning a blind eye to injustices and flaws.

The audience may ask questions during the event or submit them beforehand by sending them to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) . JMC's director of academic programs Tom Cleveland ([link removed]) , will act as the moderator.
