And they harm patient access
Planned Parenthood
There's no good reason for the unnecessary restrictions on accessing medication abortion.
Add your name and tell the Biden-Harris administration to suspend this barrier and expand safe access to the abortion pill!

It should be easy to get the care you need, ESPECIALLY during a pandemic, right?

OF COURSE.

But there's a safe, effective medication that is a baffling exception — medication abortion (also known as the abortion pill).

Many people face barriers to accessing medication abortion because of burdensome restrictions. Federal policies require patients to show up in person at a clinic, medical office, or hospital to get it — even though they can take the pill later on their own.

There's no medical or scientific reason for these policies. It's especially harmful during a pandemic, forcing people to needlessly risk COVID‑19 exposure. Patients should be able to get their medication in a safe way that makes the most sense for them — without medically unnecessary restrictions.

Add your name right now to tell the Biden‑Harris administration to suspend this barrier and immediately expand safe access to medication abortion. We'll deliver every single signature!

I urge the Biden‑Harris administration to suspend dangerous restrictions on the abortion pill.

Medication abortion is a safe and effective way to end an early pregnancy and to manage a miscarriage. Medically unnecessary, in-person requirements force many patients to delay care and travel hundreds of miles to access essential health services.

Those most affected by these restrictions are people with low incomes, people of color, and people in underserved areas — who are already disproportionately harmed by COVID‑19. It's a cruel and medically unnecessary restriction.

Here's how this should (and CAN!) work — if we come together and get loud:
  1. Our voices amplify the harm of these medically unnecessary barriers and the administration reviews the necessity of these requirements, particularly in a pandemic.
  2. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acknowledges that the severe restrictions are unwarranted. Medication abortion has been treated differently than any other drug, even during COVID‑19 — despite there being no medically necessary reason to do so.
  3. The FDA suspends the in‑person requirement, allowing patients to access the critical health care services they need — and we move closer to permanent removal of the requirements.
  4. Medication abortion is far more accessible, and we continue to build a more equitable world where people have access to the sexual and reproductive health care they need, no matter who they are or where they live.

Will you sign on to that?

Many Planned Parenthood health centers are proud to offer medication abortion, which has helped over 4 million people control their reproductive lives and futures.

Thank you for fighting alongside us to make it available to more people — so that everyone can get the care they need when they need it.
And thanks for all you do,
Jacqueline Ayers, Vice President of Government Relations & Public Policy
Planned Parenthood Federation of America
P.S. Ending this completely unnecessary and harmful barrier is a top priority to protect sexual and reproductive health care services for patients during COVID-19. So after you add your name, please ask your friends and family to do the same. Spread the word on this one.
