Hello Friend,
Across Canada, too many people are struggling to find a home – or to keep the home they have. The pandemic has compounded pre-existing problems such as precarious work and poverty, leading to housing insecurity and homelessness.
It’s time for the federal government to confront the twin crises of housing affordability and homelessness head on.
We’re a year into this pandemic – now is the time to step up and act.
Call for action!
We’re calling on the federal government to declare a national housing affordability and homelessness emergency and to take immediate concrete action:
- establish a national moratorium on evictions – until the pandemic is over and for a reasonable time after – in cooperation with provincial governments.
- implement a national residential arrears assistance program to protect people at risk of eviction due to accumulated rent arrears.
- enhance the Canada Housing Benefit.
- prioritize funding for non-profit and cooperative housing.

Green MPs hear from their constituents about the never-ending struggle to keep a roof over their families’ heads. I see the need for more affordable housing in Toronto Centre, where people are forced to sleep on the streets. We know these serious issues are affecting people in every part of Canada, and the pandemic has only made things worse.
This is why we are proposing progressive solutions.
Adequate housing is a fundamental human right. In Canada today, too many people live with the fear that their home is about to be taken away.
We have the solutions to do better.
