In a moment, I’m going to ask you to chip in to support Jennifer Carroll Foy for Governor. But first, I want to tell you a story about Jennifer that left a big impression on me -- and some ink, too.
I met Jennifer as we ran for office together in 2017. We had both been told “no” -- me for trying to beat a 25-year Republican incumbent as a trans woman, her for trying to flip a Republican seat while pregnant with twins.
A few months later, I became the first openly trans person elected to any state legislature, and Jennifer was sworn in with her baby boys in her arms.
When Jennifer believed that Virginia could become the last state needed to finally ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, other Virginia delegates told her “no,” that it was a “dead issue.” But I knew she wouldn’t give up.
Sure enough, Jennifer championed and ratified the ERA -- and in doing so wrote my personal favorite of her policies. I even decided to keep a copy of it with me forever:
Text: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”
When I ran for office, my priorities were clear: Feed hungry kids. Fix failing roads. Provide concrete benefits for my constituents.
Jennifer has the same priorities. She doesn't make empty promises or apply band-aid solutions -- she puts in the hard work to make lasting, impactful change.
Jennifer Carroll Foy was born and raised in Petersburg. In 2017, she flipped a Republican district as a first-time candidate pregnant with twins. During her time as Delegate, Jennifer championed the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, helped expand Medicaid to 400,000 Virginians, and advocated for the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable communities.
She has a career of public service and it started long before 2017. As a public defender, Jennifer helped give a voice to the often voiceless — children, people suffering from addiction, those experiencing homelessness, those with mental illness, and the poor.
Now she’s running to be the first woman elected Governor of Virginia and serve as the first Black woman to be governor nationwide.
Help her make history. Donate now.
