From The New York Times: “Republican legislators in dozens of states are trying to make voting more difficult, mostly because they believe that lower voter turnout helps their party win elections.”
The GOP isn't even trying to hide their anti-democratic agenda, not anymore. They're rolling out hundreds of voter suppression tactics to take back the House and the Senate in 2022. In battleground states like Georgia and Iowa, GOP voter restrictions will virtually eliminate mail in voting, give voters less time to cast their ballots, and target Black organizers who used Sunday voting to turn out their communities.
University of Florida political scientist Michael McDonald has sounded the alarm on the GOP's tactics, declaring, “We are witnessing the greatest roll back of voting rights in this country since the Jim Crow era.”
Democrats are doing everything they can to safeguard our free and fair elections -- from passing the For The People Act in the House to vowing to reenact the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. But listen, none of these measures will pass when Republicans can use another Jim Crow relic, the Senate filibuster, to block them.
An increasing number of Dems are pushing to eliminate the filibuster -- even moderates like Joe Manchin are now open to reform. But we still need to convince Biden, who says he has a “preference” for the status quo, to make the move.
