Dear John,

This Wednesday, the Senate will vote on the nomination of Xavier Becerra, President Biden's pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Yet Becerra has an alarming track record promoting abortion and advancing a radical sexual ideology.

During his confirmation hearings, Becerra failed to alleviate senators' grave concerns. Sen. Mitt Romney asked a straightforward question: "Most people agree that partial-birth abortion is awful. You voted against a ban on partial-birth abortion. Why?" Becerra's response was simply to say, "I understand that people have different deeply held beliefs on this issue, and I respect that."

That is an unacceptable answer for someone being considered for HHS Secretary.

HHS boasts the largest budget of any federal agency and it oversees twenty-seven different National Institutes and Centers of Health. The role of HHS Secretary is a critically important position--one that will shape the policies on life, family, and religious liberty for the next four years.

Becerra is a radical choice for this role, and senators should oppose his nomination.

Becerra supports late-term abortions and infanticide.

In 2003, Becerra voted against prohibiting the horrific practice of partial-birth abortion. In 2015, Becerra voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which would require health care workers to provide care for babies who survived an attempted abortion.

Becerra wants taxpayer-funded abortions.

In 1993, Becerra voted against the historically bipartisan Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion. As a Representative in the U.S. House, Becerra voted against the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act three separate times.

Becerra is against conscience protections for pro-life Americans.

As attorney general for California, Becerra defended a California law that required pro-life pregnancy care centers to provide information to their patients on how to obtain state-funded abortions.

Becerra advocates for a radical sexuality ideology.

One of Becerra's first acts as California's attorney general was to sue a California county for its school restroom policy which provided separate restrooms for those who identified as transgender, insisting that students should be able to use the men's or women's restrooms as they like.

Becerra has a long track record of embracing radical policies on abortion and sexuality issues. Becerra's extreme beliefs make him a dangerous choice for HHS Secretary. If confirmed, Becerra would be well-positioned to enact further anti-life, anti-family, and anti-faith policies.

Please contact your senators today to tell them NOT to confirm Xavier Becerra to become Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Sincerely,

Travis S. Weber, J.D., LL.M.
Vice President for Policy and Government Affairs
