More people now eligible for vaccinations

**A message from City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen:**

Cllr David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council

I?m pleased to see that more people are now eligible for the Covid-19 vaccination. From today local NHS partners have made appointments available for people over-50. I would urge everyone in this age group to book their vaccination as soon as possible by using the online link [link removed] [ [link removed] ] or by calling 0115 883 4640.

Of course, it?s never too late to book your appointment if you are from one of the earlier cohorts to be invited for vaccination. Please don?t feel that you have been missed: if you are over 60, 70 or 80 you can still get your vaccination. There sites all over the city and county that have appointments ? and we have been told by the NHS locally that they expect to double the number of weekly jabs to 80,000 people. The more people who are vaccinated, they better protected we will all be against this terrible virus.

*Nottingham stands up to racism ahead of United Nations Anti-racism Day*

Nottingham Together

Nottingham is a diverse city where people from different backgrounds get along well together but of course, we know that there are still people who are subject to racist abuse and we can never be complacent about it or tolerate any form of prejudice. That?s why I would encourage people to take part in a series of virtual events happening this week to mark World Anti-Racism Day.

The Council House will be lit up purple to mark the occasion and events include online workshops discussing what we have in common, a panel discussion on how Covid 19 has affected minority groups and how the health gap can be bridged after the pandemic.

*Government urgently needs to bring forward funding plan for adult social care*

Nottingham Skyline

Last week I joined councillors and local Members of Parliament to write to the Government to highlight our concern about the funding gap in Adult Social Care and urge them to publish their plans for fair and adequate funding for the sector.??

The Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) have declared that the rising costs in this area are causing enormous challenges for local authority finances. They estimate that ?1.3 billion is needed to cover demographic and inflationary pressures in 2021 alone. The Government?s current approach to funding that gap through their social care precept on council tax is both unfair and inadequate as it represents a significant sum to local households, but makes a negligible impact on the pressures to the council?s budget in this area.

I will continue to work with colleagues in the council and in Parliament to push Government to keep its promise to bring about sustainable funding of social care services.

*Active Travel consultation? *

Active travel

The council has successfully bid for ?2m from the Government?s Active Travel Fund and now we are asking people to comment on proposals for a number of schemes. Schemes include measures to deter cut-through traffic and create quieter, safer neighbourhoods in parts of the city as well as improving pedestrian and cycle links. We are also proposing to make permanent several of the School Streets measures that were trialled last year. These restrict vehicles from entering the streets immediately outside schools, creating more space and a safer environment for parents, carers and children.

We received a lot of responses to the trial schemes last year, on what worked well, and what didn?t work so well, and this has played a big role in shaping the proposals we?re consulting on now. We want to know what people think, and I?d encourage everyone to take this opportunity to have their say, especially if there is a scheme in their local area.

*It?s census time again!*

2021 census

Did you know that the census has been taking place every decade since 1801? It?s used by the Government and many other organisations to plan for the future of our country. It?s so important for everyone in our city that you fill it in ? your contribution will make sure your community has the transport, healthcare and schools and other services it needs in the future.

A letter with your personal code may now have arrived at your address, it will give you the instructions on how to fill in the census online. Remember, you can fill in the census anytime, you don?t need to wait until Census Day on 21 March.

The 2021 Census features an historic change, as the survey now includes two voluntary questions on sexual orientation and trans status. This will give the first accurate picture of the size and make-up of the LGBT+ population in Britain. If you?re not out at home, you can still be counted without your family or housemates finding our your response. To request an individual code, visit census.gov.uk and click ?start census? then scroll to ?Need to answer separately from your household?. Find out more [ [link removed] ]
