John,

Justice Ginsburg would have turned 88 today. I still cherish my RBG doll, the many great examples she set, as well as my own opportunity to have had dinner with her when she and her husband Marty visited Portland a number of years ago for a celebration at my synagogue. And, of course, like all of you, I miss her terribly.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought for gender equality from the very beginning of her career. Her work ultimately gained for women: the right to hold specific jobs; the right to attend college; and the right to own credit cards. Today, these rights are taken for granted — thanks to Justice Ginsburg and other legal pioneers.

Justice Ginsburg’s work and time on the Supreme Court mean women today can lead lives of our own choosing, not lives circumscribed by outdated gender norms.

Almost every decision Justice Ginsburg made placed her firmly on the side of the rights of vulnerable populations in the United States. She voted on several landmark LGBTQ cases, protected undocumented immigrant rights, and protected the rights of people with disabilities. She fought to protect voting rights and for criminal justice reform — two areas where Black and Brown people have been especially disadvantaged.

As a woman working in law, I have been in awe of Justice Ginsburg and have found both inspiration and liberation in her example.

“To make life a little better for people less fortunate than you,” said this great woman, “that’s what I think a meaningful life is. One lives not just for oneself but for one’s community.”

I promise to continue to work towards progress, carrying on Justice Ginsburg’s legacy in every aspect of my work. In some multiple of 88, will you help me continue her fight for equality?
