Hi there --
Black organizers and progressive activists in Georgia worked tirelessly to turn out voters and pull off the impossible -- unseating two Republican incumbent Senators in what was once called a solid red state.
But the state's Republicans took notice -- and now they're taking aim at our most effective voter turnout strategies. According to voting rights activist Stacey Abrams, GA's GOP has introduced “one of the worst vote by mail bills in the nation & part of the largest push to restrict voting rights since Jim Crow.”
Vote by mail is one of the main reasons that the last election saw record turnout. It allowed millions of voters to cast their ballots during a global pandemic. The GOP's attacks wouldn't just eliminate that option, it would also allow the legislature to steal power from state and local election officials.
Democrats are calling this out as a naked attempt to suppress voters of color and keep voters away from the polls so that Republicans can again control Georgia.
And look, this is only the first wave of anti-voter legislation we'll see -- not only in Georgia, but in swing states all across the country. The GOP is determined to take back control by any means necessary, no matter how egregious their actions have to be.
Abrams laid it out clearly: “There is a coordinated attack on voting rights. GOP-led legislatures in GA, AZ and NH are pushing dozens of bills to make it harder for people of color & young people to vote.”
And if Republicans rig the 2022 elections and take back the House, they will solidify their anti-democratic agenda in Washington. Lindsey Graham is already threatening to impeach Kamala Harris -- we can't afford to find out what else they're willing to do.
We have one shot to defend our majority from everything the Republicans will throw at us. We can do it, too -- we overcame their sabotage in 2018 to take back the House and right there in Georgia last year to take back the Senate. Now, it's our time to come together stronger than ever before.
But while the GOP is busy slashing voting rights, we're struggling to raise the funds we need to get moving for next year. We're currently $2,083 short of our goal this week -- and we desperately need you with us now to make up the difference and keep voting rights alive in Georgia and across the country. You have always turned up for Democracy before, and we need you now more than ever.
