We're going with taxpayer subsidized signaling station.


Washington Post (9/28/19) reports: "On Thursday, according to Maryland officials, RS Automotive became the first service station in the nation to completely convert its equipment from offering gasoline — the flammable fuel that powers internal combustion engines and global conflicts alike — to electric power, the sustainable stuff that many see as the heart of America’s decarbonized future. But one important detail remained: Nobody, including the station’s longtime owner or the Electric Vehicle Institute — a Baltimore-based company spearheading the transition with the help of a state grant program — was entirely sure what to call a gas station that doesn’t offer ... well, gas...The full renovation was funded by EVI as well as the Maryland Energy Administration, which provided a grant of $786,000...In the end, Doley said, embracing electric power wasn’t so much about contracts or profit but the enthusiasm his 17-year-old daughter displayed when he initially floated the idea past her...'My daughter said, "Dad, we gotta do it!"' he said. 'She’s very passionate about Tesla and the environment, and we listened to her because she’s the younger generation.'"

The free ride is coming to an end for California's eco-elites.


CFACT (9/27/19) blog: "For years electric vehicle owners benefited from federal subsidies (financed by the working class)...They also enjoy exemptions from the fuel taxes that pay for road and bridge maintenance as they use no 'fuel' as it relates to powering a combustion engine. The average household income of electric vehicle (EV) purchasers is upwards of $200,000.  This subsidy is a burden on American families and disproportionately impacts low-income consumers, who can’t afford to purchase EVs, but are forced to pay for supporting infrastructure while EV owners who enjoy the benefits of that same infrastructure are given a free pass...As an insult to your personal wallet, Congress is using your tax money to give the wealthy a $7,500 tax credit. Under existing law, buyers of expensive electric cars can get up to $7,500 in tax credits for the purchase of qualifying electric vehicles. California, where half of all the EVs in the country reside, has been a huge supporter of EV’s. They cater to the elite EV owners by being virtually the last state to impose fees to help pay for maintaining roads the heavy EV’s are using."

It's a good thing academia has such a rigorous peer review process. 


San Diego Union-Tribune (9/27/19) reports: "The journal Nature retracted a study published last year that found oceans were warming at an alarming rate due to climate change. The prestigious scientific journal issued the formal notice this week for the paper published Oct. 31, 2018 by researchers at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. They released a statement published on the journal’s website that read in part: 'Shortly after publication, arising from comments from Nicholas Lewis, we realized that our reported uncertainties were underestimated owing to our treatment of certain systematic errors as random errors.'...The retraction of the article came on the same day that the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its latest report on the impacts warming on oceans and ice-covered regions. The findings were some of the most dire to date, warning that if emissions continue, sea-level rise could reach three feet by the end of the century, a more than 10 percent increase from 2013 predictions. At the same time, the report found that in some cities and islands hundred-year floods will become yearly events."

Sure, I'll turn my thermostat down, but I'm not giving up my smoker.


Associated Press (9/27/19) reports: "Turn off the lights when they aren’t needed? Check. Lower the thermostat a few degrees in winter? Maybe. Go full-time vegetarian? Probably not. Americans are willing to go only so far in engaging in habits that conserve energy and reduce emissions that are warming the planet, according to a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The poll adds to research showing that many take modest steps they consider convenient and feasible — and good for their pocketbooks. But actions that would involve significant lifestyle choices such as diet or transportation are a tougher sell...Climate concern isn’t the only reason Americans conserve energy. Previous research by The AP-NORC Center suggests another motive is saving money. The latest survey, conducted last month, shows that some people who don’t believe in climate change routinely take some actions, such as turning off lights and limiting use of heat and air conditioning. So do many who acknowledge the planet is warming but think it’s happening naturally, instead of from human activities."
