Friend,
One of the most pernicious GOP talking points coming out of last week's events and our efforts to hold President Trump accountable is that Democrats should be focusing on addressing the issues facing Americans, not worrying about investigating the president's misconduct.
Well, I've got news for my Republican friends: we can walk and chew gum at the same time. And if Trump bothered to pay attention, he'd know we've passed hundreds of bills already this year in the House, on just about every issue under the sun.
In fact, we've accomplished quite a lot since voters like you brought a Blue Wave to the polls in 2018. Here are just some of the bills the House has passed under a Democratic majority, while simultaneously working to hold this president accountable:
The For the People Act to expand voting rights, make Election Day a federal holiday, creates automatic voter registration, and improve election security;
The Bipartisan Background Checks Act to finally establish universal background checks by getting rid of the 'gun show loophole' and keep guns out of the wrong hands;
The Raise the Wage Act to increase the federal minimum wage to $15/hour by 2025;
The Equality Act to ban discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in work, housing, healthcare, and other public spaces;
The DREAM and Promise Act to create a pathway to citizenship for the nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to this country as children.
You did this. You enabled our action. You empowered us to fight for you. You.
So, why haven't any of these bills become law yet? Two words: Mitch McConnell.
The Senate Majority Leader won't bring any of these bills up for a vote in the Senate, in his partisan attempt to block any and all progressive legislation that could make a real difference. He doesn't call himself the "grim reaper" for nothing.
I promise you this: Democrats will not give up on passing solutions to the most important issues facing us while we do our Constitutional duty to hold this unruly executive branch accountable.
If you're with us, make a contribution of whatever you can today before our FEC fundraising deadline tonight at midnight: it will let the GOP know where the people stand.
