Weekend Reading
Dear John,
Thanks to calls, emails, and public pressure from people like you, Congress has passed a COVID-19 relief package—the largest antipoverty effort in a generation. It includes much-needed unemployment benefits as well as assistance with food, housing, childcare, and other aid that will go a long way toward meeting the real needs of our communities.
Now it’s up to us to keep pushing our elected officials to ensure we move forward to keep our communities healthy and well and on a secure path to recovery.
Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
Sign our petition with Daily Kos: Stop the Biden administration from reopening Homestead migrant child detention center!: [link removed] Jailing children is never acceptable. Tell the administration to keep Homestead detention center closed—and end the detention of migrant children!
What you need to know about the Biden administration’s plans to reopen Homestead detention center: [link removed] No child should ever be detained, especially in a pandemic. The Biden administration has better, more humane alternatives to meet the needs and protect the rights of children seeking refuge, writes AFSC’s Kristin Kumpf.
Rebuilding lives and livelihoods after hurricanes in Guatemala: [link removed] Thanks to your support, AFSC has provided emergency food and other necessities to hundreds of people in Guatemala—and is now helping them rebuild for the long term, writes AFSC’s Luis Paiz Bekker.
We won’t stop until we dismantle the whole racist system: [link removed] As we work to stop police violence, we cannot lose focus on what’s important: Black Lives Matter.
Tell Congress: Demand Israeli provide Palestinians with COVID-19 vaccinations: [link removed] Two members of Congress, Rep. Pocan and Rep. Carson, are urging colleagues to sign a letter urging Biden to pressure Israel to ensure Palestinian access to life-saving vaccines. Please ask your congressperson to add their names to this letter before it is sent on Monday!
Celebrating Women’s History Month: [link removed] Share our Facebook post featuring activist Angela Davis, who was part of an AFSC program that helped students attend integrated schools to further their education.
Make your annual gift to help us meet our goal: [link removed] We are seeking 500 people to give by March 31. Will you be one? Whether you are giving for the first time or renewing your annual donation, your generosity makes all the difference.
Be well and take care
