Friend,
Candidates like myself get asked almost everyday: Why are you running for office?
It's a question with many answers. After watching a deadly pandemic, economic crisis, and mass movement for racial justice all unfold simultaneously, I knew I could no longer sit on the sidelines. We're in need of bold leadership that is ready to upset the status quo.
But there's another big reason why I'm running. My daughter Ava.
Ava is just six years old. As a father, I constantly worry about her future. Will she have a liveable planet free from climate catastrophe? Will she have to deal as much as I have with racial bias in school or work or with the police? Will she grow up into a society and economy that is more equal than the one we have now?
When I thought about these questions, I realized that we are not powerless to change the answers. And so I jumped into the race for Lt. Governor, knowing full well that although I was an underdog, I would fight my hardest to create a future where my daughter can prosper.
I know there are millions of people just like me, who feel a responsibility to leave behind a better world than we inherited. If you're one of those people, I hope you'll stand by me and the movement our campaign is building.
Together we can do right by the next generation and create a government and economy that works for all of us rather than the powerful few.
In solidarity,
Sean
