My ongoing work to shine a light on the dark money plaguing our politics is making some people nervous. How do I know this? Yet again this week, the conservative outrage machine has leapt into action to attack me personally and try to distract the public from my fight on behalf of transparency and disclosure in our politics.

Whenever this happens, I know I’m striking a nerve.

It’s been a busy week. The Wall Street Journal editorial page (the “Polluter Page” as I call it) came after me again for “disrespect for the Court” and making “threats” because I dare to speak out about the well-funded, secretive operation to influence the federal judiciary. This is not a new line of argument from the editors at the Polluter Page, but their denunciations are getting louder and angrier. If I had to guess, I’d say that’s because as the new Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on the Courts I can bring this issue to the public’s notice more often.

My friends at the WSJ editorial page aren't the only ones attacking me this week. A dark-money group launched an ad campaign against me in a not-so-subtle attempt to shut me up. Good luck with that, guys.

With Democrats holding the White House and majorities in both houses of Congress, the big donors propping up these secretive groups are getting uncomfortable. They don’t want us looking too closely at their shady dealings, so they attack – both openly and behind the protection of anonymity – anyone with the audacity to question their massive spending to influence our elections and capture our courts.

I’ve been the target of these smears before. I didn’t back down from them then, and I won’t back down from them now, especially now that we’re in a better position to make the special interests sweat.

Thanks for your continued support – I look forward to keeping you updated on how this fight goes. It’s going to be a tough one, but it’s one worth having.
