John,
Fifty-six years ago this month, marchers led by John Lewis and Martin Luther King were beaten and tear-gassed in Selma, Alabama, for demanding the right to vote.
This moment lives at the heart of the American civil rights movement and was foundational to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Brave organizers took our entire nation a giant step forward that day, but the struggle for justice rages on.
Republicans have stopped at nothing to eviscerate this fundamental right. Today, GOP lawmakers are pushing more than 250 bills in 43 states to limit voter registration opportunities, roll back no-excuse absentee voting, purge voter rolls, and create stricter voter ID requirements.
From Georgia to Minnesota, make no mistake -- this Republican assault on democracy is happening at every level nationwide. Just take it from leading voting rights attorney Marc Elias, who knows that we may have won the election in November, but we still have our work cut out for us:
We must pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act and the For the People Act to restore the Voting Rights Act of 1965, create same-day registration nationwide, ensure clean and fair elections, and get big money out of politics.
Thanks for all you do,
Team Keith
