This past weekend, the Senate passed a historic COVID relief package to expand vaccines, safely reopen schools, and help families.
It’s a powerful bill that will make a real difference. And it is also widely popular — recent polling shows as many as 77% of all voters support the relief package.
So why didn’t a single Senate Republican vote for the bill?
Because Mitch McConnell and GOP Senators are more interested in obstructing President Biden’s agenda than providing critical relief to the millions of people struggling during this pandemic.
We were able to pass this bill with a simple majority thanks to an obscure Senate procedure called reconciliation. But that process won’t work for other big priorities on our agenda: from strengthening voter protections, to gun safety measures, to parts of tackling the climate crisis.
Mitch McConnell is prepared to use the filibuster at every turn to veto everything that the American people sent us to Washington to do.
Senate Democrats can’t let him get away with it. If we have to get rid of the filibuster to get things done, then we have to get rid of the filibuster.
Add your name if you agree: It's long past time to get rid of the filibuster. We must remove Mitch McConnell's veto power over broadly popular policies the American people want to see passed.
Let's be clear: Republicans' opposition to getting rid of the filibuster is about trying to cling onto power even though they just lost an election. Republicans abuse the rules when they’re out of power, then turn around and blow off the rules when they’re in power.
Enough.
I didn't come to Washington to join a debating club. I came to make real change for Americans. And right now, Democrats have an unprecedented opportunity to deliver bold, desperately needed reform.
Universal background checks for gun purchases. Raising the minimum wage. Tackling the climate crisis. Stopping racist voter suppression measures in their tracks. Banning partisan gerrymandering. Discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ Americans.
We can do it all, but only if we stop giving Mitch McConnell veto authority on our agenda.
Add your name if you agree: It is time that we abolish the filibuster and get to the work we were sent to Washington to do.
Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
