Georgia House passes GOP bill rolling back voting access

The January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol was a deadly reminder of the threats facing our democracy. For years, Republican politicians have tried to make it harder for Americans to exercise their right to vote. These voter suppression laws target the poor, people of color, and older Americans, while reinforcing myths about voter fraud and efforts by adversaries like Russia to shake our faith in democracy. When voter suppression laws failed to stop the diverse coalition that elected Joe Biden, Donald Trump and his allies spread the lie that our election was stolen. Now, this deadly lie has become a rallying cry for new voter suppression laws.

We must act now to defend our democracy. That's why Mark Warner is proud to support the For the People Act (H.R.1), which would strengthen our democracy by defending the right to vote, securing our election infrastructure, and combating the toxic effects of big money on our political system.

Here in Virginia, we’ve seen the damage done by partisan voter suppression firsthand. Governor Northam and our state legislature have worked hard to undo the damage done by a GOP majority in Richmond that made it harder to vote and divided Virginians into illegal, racially gerrymandered legislative districts.

The For the People Act would carry on this important work nationwide. It would prohibit politicians from choosing their voters through partisan and racial gerrymandering. And it would restore key provisions of the Voting Rights Act, gutted by the Supreme Court, that protected communities of color from discrimination at the polls. The bill would increase funding for election security, strengthen ethics laws, and end the dominance of big money in politics. It also includes Mark Warner’s Honest Ads Act, which increases transparency in online political advertising and combats foreign election interference.
