NEW RESEARCH

Nearly one-quarter of LBQ women are parents

New research from the Williams Institute finds nearly one-quarter of LBQ women ages 18 to 59 and an estimated 24% of female same-sex couples have had children. Parents were more likely to be bisexual, in a relationship with a man, and non-urban. Bisexual parents reported greater psychological distress, less life satisfaction and happiness, and less connection to the LGBT community than lesbian parents. Parents with other identities perceived more social support from friends and reported lower levels of internalized homophobia than bisexual parents.

Previous research in October 2020 found an estimated 19% of transgender adults in the U.S. are parents. The majority of transgender parents are women (53%), while approximately one-third are transgender non-binary (36%) and one-tenth (12%) are transgender men.

LGBT LAW AND POLICY
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) issued a rule on Tuesday clarifying that the prohibition against sex discrimination under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act includes discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The rule is in line with recommendations the Williams Institute made in a comment submitted to CFPB in December. Our research finds that LGBT people face widespread discrimination in credit-related activities. And this discrimination contributes to lower homeownership rates among same-sex couples and LGBT people.

Two new executive orders will protect LGBT students and sexual minority women

On Monday, President Biden signed two executive orders that could benefit the lives and livelihoods of LGBT students and sexual minority women.

The first order aims to protect LGBT students by requiring the Department of Education to interpret and enforce Title IX to prohibit discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity. An estimated 3.6 million students in the U.S. identify as LGBT, including about 150,000 who identify as transgender. Several Williams Institute studies have documented widespread and pervasive harassment and bullying of LGBT students at school.

The second order establishes a Gender Policy Council to promote workplace diversity, fairness, and inclusion across the federal workforce and military and to combat gender-based violence. An estimated 5.1% of women in the U.S. identify as LGBT and an estimated 24% of female same-sex couples are raising children, compared to 8% of male same-sex couples. Williams Institute research finds that LGBT women, in particular women of color, are disproportionately impacted by unemployment, poverty, and homelessness.
