John,
Last week we saw, again, terrifying threats of violence towards the U. S. Capitol resulting in its closure and Congress cancelling its scheduled session. These threats are not contained to the federal level. In the past few months, here in Michigan we have seen a string of unbelievable, horrific events including an attempted kidnapping of our Governor and a credible bomb threat at the State Capitol in Lansing.
In response to these atrocities one of my Democratic colleagues, Representative Kevin Hertel, requested that the Bureau of Elections allow the use of campaign funds for purchase ofhttp:// [link removed] vests, personal protective equipment, and home security systems. (http:// [link removed])
Michigan campaign finance law allows campaign funds to be used for anything “necessary and ordinary” to fulfill the duties and responsibilities as a member of the Michigan Legislature. Personal protective equipment, like bullet proof vests, should not be necessary or ordinary in order for elected officials to do their jobs.
Increasing distrust in democracy, fueled by irresponsible Republican leadership, has made conditions of violence, intimidation, and vitriol the standard on the grounds of Michigan’s State Capitol. This new norm reduces acts of fear and intimidation to “ordinary” aspects of working life for legislators, their staff and their families. This is unacceptable.
As Democratic Leader, I’m working hard every day to protect each and every Michigander and to recruit and support candidates who will do the same.
Can you aid in my fight with a $15, $25, or $100 contribution? ([link removed])
Sincerely,

Donna

We hope that you are well and healthy during this very difficult time. We have cancelled our in-person fundraising events until we can meet again safely, which makes email fundraising more important than ever. We know that not everyone is able to financially support our campaign right now, but for those who can, every dollar given will go directly to finding innovative new ways to communicate with voters. We won’t let this virus stop us from making positive change in Lansing, and we hope you’ll stick with us however you can. Thank you for being a part of our team.
