John, the 8th Amendment guarantees protection from
cruel and unusual punishment, a protection that hasn’t always been guaranteed to Black Americans. Just last week, however, South Carolina state senators voted to reinstate the use of firing squads and the electric chair as alternatives to lethal injection.
The death penalty disproportionately affects Black men.
Since 1912, 282 executions have been performed by South Carolina; 208 of those executed were Black men.
This instance only emphasizes the dangers of a representation that is not diverse; if the state government reflected the people of South Carolina, a proposal like this would never see the light of day.
Even as more and more states move toward ending the death penalty, SC lawmakers threaten to erase the progress toward a more just and humane society.
We have to act now to stop them!
Sign right now and tell South Carolina lawmakers to stop the revival of these immoral and barbaric forms of capital punishment. We need [30] signatures from xxxxxx before 11:59 pm>>
**Deadline 11:59 P.M.**
We cannot go backward,
