How Do We Bring Back Muni Service

With good news on vaccination rates, COVID rates in San Francisco, and the $30B for transit we just helped pass in the American Recovery Plan Act, it's time to look at how we bring back Muni service! While SFMTA has done an admirable job making tough choices based on its values, we want to highlight some of those values to put front and center as we make decisions on the return of more service.

THIS WEEKEND - Thank your driver!

March 18 is Transit Driver Appreciation Day (TDAD). Our Muni operators have had a particularly hard year. It would mean the world to them to get a big thank you from a whole bunch of riders - like you!!

Simply get a big piece of paper, a big marker, write your personal message, and send us a picture of your awesome smile with your note by March 14 so we can deliver them all together on March 18.

We only have a few pictures submitted so far, so please take the 5 minutes now to make our drivers know how important they are to us!

Local Funding Working Group

Bringing back Muni service of course depends on funding. Catching up with maintenance and state-of-good-repair and building the future Muni we need will depend on funding, well beyond the relief funding that just passed.

SFMTA staff gave us a great presentation about Muni funding shortfalls and some proposals to address them. We learned a lot about what SFMTA sees as the funding priorities and why - what needs to get underway to succeed on our next ballot; what needs changes in state law; what are policy and program changes that will take time to study, develop, and implement.

Join our Local Funding Working Group to learn more, share your ideas, prioritize and build the campaigns we'll need to win.

First Meeting
Thursday, March 18
6:30 – 7:30pm

To learn more, watch the video of our meeting with SFMTA, with great questions from our members. SF Weekly published an excellent article about the event, by SFTR member Benjamin Schneider. Mission Local and the Examiner also published recent articles about Muni funding.

Win a Chance to Tour the Subway!

We've been hearing a lot about what SFMTA is working on in the subway to make sure we don't have a repeat of August 2020, or April 2019, or February 2019. Well, here's your chance to see for yourself!

Become a member before March 22, and you'll be entered in a raffle for one of six (6) spots on a tour that will include Duboce, Church, Castro, and the (in)famous Eureka Curve (including the ghost station at Eureka Valley).

This tour is not for the faint of heart. It might take as long as 3 hours (depending on how many questions you have). We'll be walking on track ballast - basically pebbles - so bring some good sturdy shoes or boots. We're encouraged to bring our own flashlights (we'll provide extra in case). The tour will either take place on the 29th or the 31st (we will confirm shortly), so make sure your calendar can be clear. Of course masks will be required and you must comply with all instructions from our tour guide.

Regional Transit 101 (March 18)

As part of Voices for Public Transportation, a regional coalition of labor, community-based organizations, and equity advocates, we're co-hosting a training around regional transit advocacy on March 18. This will be a great way to learn more about the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, about what the regional coalition is working on, and how to get all our voices heard on the regional level.

Thursday, March 18
5:00-6:15pm

Regional Working Group Kicked Off!

Over twenty members helped kick off our regional funding working group earlier this week. We had a great discussion about opportunities to secure federal stimulus money for Muni; the shape of regional transportation and land use policies; and how we might engage with our regional transit coalition, Voices for Public Transportation.

Our members represented a range of knowledge and experience - we know we have a lot to learn together, so we encourage you to drop in at our next meeting even if you missed the first. We will be discussing how to improve the Bay Area's public transit by better coordinating service and fares.

Our next meeting is Tuesday March 23rd at 6pm. Sign up for more information and the zoom link.
