Friends -

Late last week, the New York State Senate voted to limit the expanded emergency powers granted to Governor Cuomo at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While I believe the bill fell short of a full repeal of the powers, I voted YES because it is in the best interest of New Yorkers to take immediate action to end the governor’s ability to unilaterally issue new directives as our state continues to recover.

Our democracy is reliant on three co-equal branches of government, and as we lead our communities into recovery, it is imperative that we act with the transparency New Yorkers deserve.

I know this can be a somewhat complicated and opaque process, but it just so happens my good friend Assemblymember Yuh-Line Niou and I created a short video on the Expanded Emergency Powers as part of our new series called Lit Politics — A Candid Conversation About New York Politics.

Watch Yuh-Line and me discuss Governor Cuomo’s Expanded Emergency Powers, including video from last year shortly after they were granted.

Our hope is that Lit Politics can serve as an easily digestible series of videos talking about what is happening in Albany. We couldn’t think of a better and more important time to drop the series.

Stay safe,

Alessandra Biaggi
