I'm going to be straightforward, John.
I’ve mentioned before how disinformation made my mom -- a smart lady who runs an elder care facility -- scared to take the COVID vaccine. But this issue is bigger than just my mom. Disinformation targeted at the Latinx community was widespread in the 2020 election, and it’s going to keep playing a role in deciding who leads our country if we don’t do something about it.
According to researchers at MIT, “data shows that during the election, disinformation was highly targeted locally , with voters in swing states exposed to significantly more online messages about voter intimidation, fraud, ballot glitches, and unrest than voters in other states.” This was especially true in Latinx communities and on Spanish social media.
In fact, back in October, MIT wrote “Hispanic communities are key to some of the most critical swing districts in the election -- and they’re being bombarded by online propaganda.”
For me, this is extremely troubling, and I hope it is for you too. The rampant disinformation and misinformation targeted at the Latinx community chips at the very foundations of our democracy and puts all of us in danger. That’s why we have to put a stop to it -- and it’s why we just launched our new Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab with our partners at Media Matters:
NBC News: “Groups launch ‘Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab’ to combat Covid, election messaging”
It’s disappointing that big tech platforms didn't do more to combat disinformation leading up to the 2020 election and as coronavirus spread around the world. But if they won’t step up to the plate, then it’s going to be on us to figure out the best way to inoculate the Latinx community against the disinformation we’re targeted with.
Combating disinformation and ensuring our political debates are based on a common set of facts is the first step to revitalizing our democracy and building a political system based on democracy, reason, and science. We’re committed to doing the hard work needed to get the job done, but we need your support to do it.
Will you pitch in today to support us as we undertake this new mission to combat disinformation targeted at the Latinx community?
