Yesterday, Congress passed the American Rescue Plan.

The past year has been a devastating time for our country and the world. Over half a million people lost their lives, millions of people have lost their jobs, and many are still struggling to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table.

This bill takes immediate action to create safety nets for people who need it most by putting money directly in their hands, extending unemployment and SNAP benefits, providing schools with funds to reopen safely, and allocating funds for equitable vaccine distribution to our communities.

It will also take historic action to cut child poverty in half. As Co-Chair of the Majority Leader’s Task Force on Poverty and Opportunity, I fought to expand the Child Tax Credit to $3,000 per child so people can not only get back on their feet but have the resources to survive.

For months, Republicans stalled progress on meaningful relief for this country. And once again, when faced with another opportunity to put the American people first, they chose to continue playing partisan games.

Not a single Republican voted to pass this bill. That tells us one thing: Democrats were only able to pass it because of you and voters around the country who were determined to fight for long-overdue change.

Though raising the minimum wage may have been blocked, rest assured the fight for $15 will not end here. There is still a lot of work to do, but for now relief is on the way — and I will continue to fight for you until every promise made has been fulfilled.

Hope is once again on the horizon. We’re closer than ever to defeating this virus and the light at the end of the tunnel is finally in view.
